Questions people ask before buying

What happens when my year of updates ends?

Nothing changes on the version you have. The app and every version released during your year never stop or lock themselves, and you can reinstall them any time. You'll see a note when a newer version exists that your licence doesn't cover — renew for €14.95 if you want it, or don't. Never a lockout, never nagging.

One thing worth knowing: if you install one of those newer versions anyway — on a new Mac, say, where the download button gives you the latest — it runs in free mode (one room) until you either install a version your licence covers or add a renewal. The app tells you which, on screen, and both fixes take a moment.

What exactly does Free do, and what does a licence add?

Free plays your music to one room at a time — every service, every control, no time limit. You pick the room and can switch whenever you like. You can play everything that is already on your Sonos system, including your existing playlists and favourites.

Free plays, but doesn't save. Saving a playlist or the queue, adding a favourite or a radio station, pinning to your home screen, setting your own artwork and creating or editing alarms all need a licence. So do grouping rooms, scenes, lyrics, the sleep timer and settings export.

There is one licence, not several tiers. See what Doppelgänger does.

Can I try it before I buy?

Yes — that is what the 14-day trial is for. Every room and every feature, no sign-up, no card. Please use it to check that Doppelgänger does what you need with your speakers and your music services: we can't promise that a feature you don't find in the app will be added later.

What happens to what I made when the trial ends?

Nothing is deleted. Your playlists, favourites, saved queues, stations, scenes, alarms and settings stay, and they are all there again when you buy a licence.

What if Sonos changes something?

Doppelgänger works through the local interfaces of your Sonos speakers, which Sonos controls. If Sonos changes or closes them — through a firmware update, a change of policy or a change of ownership — features or the whole app may stop working. It has happened before: in 2020 Sonos introduced S2, which was not compatible with S1, so older speakers could not move to it and households could no longer combine them. We work to keep up, but we can't guarantee a fix is always possible. The details are in the licence agreement.

How many Macs can I use it on?

Five. You can see and manage your activated devices in the app, and free a seat yourself when you replace a machine — do that before you wipe it, and keep the device reference the app shows you, so you can free the seat afterwards if you forget.

Do I need an account?

No. The trial needs nothing; buying gives you a licence key by email; you enter it in the app once. That's the whole ceremony.
