Setup

Which Macs are supported?

Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs are not supported. Doppelgänger is tested on the current macOS, macOS 26 Tahoe; it starts on macOS 11 or later, but on older versions please use the trial to check that it works for you.

Which Sonos speakers work?

Speakers on the current Sonos system (S2), the one the Sonos app manages today. Older speakers that only run on the earlier S1 system have not been tested — check during the trial.

Does it work when I'm away from home?

No. Doppelgänger talks to your speakers over your home network, so your Mac has to be on the same network as the speakers.

The app can't find my speakers

Usually this is the macOS Local Network permission: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network → turn on Doppelgänger, then restart the app.

Otherwise, check that your Mac is on the same network as your speakers. Guest and office Wi-Fi networks, and VPNs that block the local network, often stop the speakers being found.

Which music services work?

Doppelgänger uses the services your Sonos system is already signed in to. The supported services, tested on Sonos, are listed on the home page: Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, Plex, Mixcloud, TuneIn, Sonos Radio and your music library. Others may work too — the 14-day trial is the way to check yours.

A music service is missing

Doppelgänger shows the services your Sonos system is signed in to. Add the missing service once in the Sonos app; it then appears in Doppelgänger by itself.

Do I still need the Sonos app?

Yes, for setting up speakers, adding music services, firmware updates and Trueplay. For everyday listening, no.

Will I see what I make in Doppelgänger in the Sonos app?

Not all of it. Your own radio stations, RadioTunes stations, scenes, Home pins, your own artwork and services you add in Doppelgänger only are kept on your Mac. The Sonos app, on your phone or elsewhere, does not show them.

What lives on your Sonos system is shared, and both apps show it: Sonos playlists, Sonos favourites, alarms, the queue, groups and volume. A station you add to your Sonos favourites shows in the Sonos app on a Mac or PC, but the Sonos phone app may not show it.

Features

How do I play DI.fm or RadioTunes on Sonos?

Switch on RadioTunes premium stations in Settings → Music (it is off at first), then click Add Station under Radio Tunes and paste the station's playlist link from the network's Hardware Player Settings page. You need a premium subscription with the network. See RadioTunes and DI.fm and the listen key guide. Adding stations needs a licence.

How do I add a radio station by its URL?

Stations → Add Station → paste the stream URL, give it a name and, if you like, your own artwork. More on the radio stations page. Saving stations needs a licence.

How do I turn a station into a playlist?

While a station or radio mix from your music service plays, press Convert to Playlist in Now Playing. Doppelgänger notes the songs as they play and saves the list as a Sonos playlist; the music itself isn't recorded. It works for music-service songs, not for internet radio streams, which have no separate songs. Saving the playlist needs a licence. More on the station to playlist page.

Trial, free mode and licence

What happens after the 14-day trial?

The app keeps working in the free mode: it plays to one room at a time, and you can switch rooms whenever you like. Saving things — playlists, favourites, stations, alarms — and grouping rooms need a licence. Nothing you made during the trial is deleted.

Can I get a refund?

Please use the 14-day trial to decide: purchases are final. Your statutory rights are unaffected. See the refund policy.

Where do I enter my licence key?

Settings → Licence → paste the key from your purchase email. Activation needs the internet once; after that the app does not need it to know you are licensed.

How do I move my licence to a new Mac?

Your licence covers 5 Macs. In Settings → Licence, release the old Mac, then enter the key on the new one.

Keep the device reference the panel shows for each Mac: if a Mac is gone before you release it, that reference lets you free its place from another Mac. If you don't have it, email us — we will free all places on your licence, and you enter the key again on the Macs you use.

How do I update the app?

If you allowed it, the app checks for a new version once a day. You can also check any time in Settings → Software Updates → Check Now. Your licence includes a year of updates; see pricing for what happens after that.

I lost my licence key

Email support@doppelgaenger.eu from the address you bought with, and we will send it again.

Reporting a problem

How do I report a bug?

Settings → Diagnostics → Save creates a log bundle with secrets removed. Look it over, then attach it to your email with a line on what you expected and what happened instead.
