How to use your DI.fm or RadioTunes listen key on Sonos
Your listen key is what lets a speaker play your premium stations. There are three ways to use it on Sonos: add stream URLs by hand through TuneIn, add them by hand in Doppelgänger on your Mac, or paste one link into Doppelgänger's RadioTunes manager, which keeps your key apart from your stations.

What a listen key is
DI.fm, RadioTunes, JazzRadio, ZenRadio, RockRadio and ClassicalRadio run on the same platform. Their premium stations stream to your account through a personal code, the listen key. Since DI.fm ended its free listening in December 2024, every DI.fm listener is a premium listener with a key.
One subscription covers the family: RadioTunes says a subscription gives you access to the other services in its network, DI.fm and its sister networks included.
Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can listen on your account.
Where to find it
Sign in on the network's website, open your settings and look for Hardware Player Settings. The key is shown there, often together with playlist (.pls) files for your channels.
What a premium stream URL looks like
A premium channel's playlist address carries the network, the channel and your key:
https://listen.di.fm/premium/channel.pls?listen_key=your-key
https://listen.radiotunes.com/premium/channel.pls?listen_key=your-key
The channel is the name in the channel's web address, such as trance. The part before it sets the quality: premium is 128k AAC, premium_high is 320k MP3. JazzRadio, ZenRadio, RockRadio and ClassicalRadio use the same shape with their own domain.
1. By hand, through TuneIn
Sonos's own way to add a station by its URL goes through TuneIn: you add the stream URL to your TuneIn favourites in the TuneIn app on your phone, then play it in the Sonos app under Your services → TuneIn → Favorites. Sonos describes the steps.
It works, but it's slow for premium stations:
- You add one station at a time, from your phone, with a TuneIn account.
- Your key sits in every saved URL. Change the key, and you have to redo every station.
- Sonos's article lists MP3, AAC and WMA streams; it doesn't mention .pls playlist files.
Some listeners also report that their RadioTunes stations went missing from their Sonos favourites after Sonos's new app in 2024.
Pick it if you want one or two stations in the Sonos app on every device, and don't mind redoing them when the key changes.
2. By hand, in Doppelgänger
Doppelgänger is a desktop controller for Sonos, made for the Mac. Like TuneIn, it lets you add any station by its stream URL, but from your Mac and without a TuneIn account:
- Open Stations → Add Station.
- Paste the channel's stream URL. A .pls playlist URL works, as do mp3 and AAC streams.
- Give it a name and, if you like, your own artwork.
- Play it in any room, pin it to Home, or add it to your Sonos favourites.
The station shows its now-playing text and artwork. As with TuneIn, your key sits in each URL you paste, so a new key means editing every station. More about adding stations by URL.
Pick it if you have a few stream URLs to hand, or you also want stations from outside the AudioAddict networks.
3. With Doppelgänger's RadioTunes manager
For premium stations, Doppelgänger also has its own manager. You paste the link the network gives you, and Doppelgänger keeps the key apart from the station:
- In Settings → Music, switch on RadioTunes premium stations. It is off at first; once it's on, the Radio Tunes panel appears.
- On the network's Hardware Player Settings page, choose a channel and a quality, and click its playlist link to copy it.
- In Radio Tunes, click Add Station and paste the link. Doppelgänger reads the network, the channel and your key from it, fills in the channel's name, and checks the link with the network before you save.
- Play it in any room, pin it to Home, or add it to your Sonos favourites.
One key works for every network, so the first link you paste sets it up for all six. The key is kept in a protected file on your Mac and isn't written into each station: Doppelgänger builds the URL when you press play. Stream quality is one setting for all your stations, too.
If you later paste a link with a different key, Doppelgänger asks whether to use the new key for all networks or keep the saved one, and checks a new key with the network before saving it. Stations you saved to your Sonos favourites still carry the old key, so Doppelgänger offers to update them. You can also set the key under Radio Tunes → Manage…, and add a station by its channel name with Enter manually. More about RadioTunes and DI.fm in Doppelgänger.
Pick it if you listen to several premium channels and control Sonos from your Mac.
Where your stations live. Stations you add in Doppelgänger, either way, are kept on this Mac; the Sonos app and other computers don't see them. To hear one elsewhere, add it to your Sonos favourites: the Sonos app on a Mac or PC then shows it too, though the Sonos phone app may not. To move your stations to another Mac, use Settings → System → Backup & transfer. Listen keys are left out of backups on purpose, so paste them again there.
Both Doppelgänger ways need a Mac with Apple silicon and a Sonos S2 system on the same network. Every feature is free for 14 days; adding stations after that needs a licence, €29.95 once. Doppelgänger is not affiliated with DI.fm, RadioTunes or AudioAddict.

Questions
Where do I find my DI.fm listen key?
On DI.fm's website: sign in, open your settings and go to Hardware Player Settings. RadioTunes and the other networks show it in the same place on their own sites.
Is DI.fm still free?
No. DI.fm ended its free listening in December 2024 and is now subscription-only.
Can I play DI.fm on Sonos without TuneIn?
Yes, with a controller that builds the premium stream URL from your listen key and hands it to the speaker. Doppelgänger does this from your Mac.
Can I play different premium stations in two rooms at once?
Usually not on one account. RadioTunes says only one connection per account can be active at a time and further connections are disconnected. To hear a premium station in several rooms, group the rooms: a Sonos group plays one stream.
Is my listen key safe in Doppelgänger?
It stays on your Mac, in a protected file, and is never shown in full again, only its last four characters. It isn't sent to us.
